Marriage – A Sacrament of Love
Marriage –
A Sacrament of Love
1st Reading: Genesis 2:18-24
After a quarrel, a wife said to her husband, “You know, I was
a fool when I married you.” And then husband replied, “Yes, dear, but I was in
love and didn’t notice it”
Today’s readings talk about three things
1.
The creation of a woman
2. Man and woman are called to live as a sacrament of love
3.
Marriage is the gift of God’s love
The first reading from the book Genesis describes the
creation of woman. Here we need to see and understand the important aspect of
creation. It is not the man who creates woman but it is God. Like Adam, Eve
also comes from the same creation which reveals one truth that woman is not inferior
to man. Since both Adam and Eve are from God they share liberty, equality and
everything equally. No one is superior and inferior.
The second reading from the letter to the Hebrew affirms the
above. We are all from God. Though men and women are not biologically same are
equal in the eyes of God. He who consecrates and those are being consecrated
all have one origin. When we are united
in Christ Jesus as one we are all saved. If so man and woman are called to live
as one especially as a sacrament of love that is to live in the relation of God’s
love forever.
Jesus in the gospel of Mark not only affirms, but also
invites people to recognize the importance of marriage. Marriage unites man and
woman as one body and one love. They are no longer separated. Man has no right
to separate what God has united. Marriage is the gift of God through which they
share the love of God. Thus marriage becomes a sacrament of God’s love and the
celebration of God’s creation. Man and woman become co-creators of God to carry
the generation of human beings. It is not merely a mutual consent, but
commitment to each other to live in relationship in God’s love.
